A side-by-side comparison of the standard text and a disputed hypothetical.

Scenario A

Complete standard text

All 6,236 numbered verses, including 9:128–129, as in every standard edition.

Scenario B · Hypothetical · Disputed

Historical and interpretive context

Interpretation
  • 9:128–129 are part of every standard printed edition, including the installed QUL data, and of the Quran as recited and transmitted.
  • Rashad Khalifa argued in Appendix 24 of his 1989 translation that the two verses were added later, partly because several of his totals become multiples of 19 only without them.
  • Critics, for example Bilal Philips (The Qur'an's Numerical Miracle: Hoax and Heresy, 1987, "Rejection of a Part of the Qur'an"), reject this, noting that the argument assumes the code it is meant to prove.
  • Numerical relationships alone cannot settle questions of textual authenticity. A change that makes some totals divisible by 19 will make others stop being divisible; which counts matter is a choice made before counting.
